The City of Abbeville implemented a State of Emergency ahead of Tropical Storm Francine. This declaration enacts the city’s emergency plans and allows for the city to participate in response and recovery plans as necessary to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of Abbeville.
The City Team has been busy preparing for the impending storm and stands ready to respond to emergencies as needed.
We are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Francine and will continue to do so throughout the night. The forecast track has shifted eastward today. Though the National Hurricane Center is not currently predicting a direct hit to Abbeville, we continue to urge residents to prepare and stay alert. We are still expected to see increasing rain and high winds above 50 mph and as with all storms, conditions and forecasts may change rapidly.
We encourage you to check your emergency supplies including a supply of water, non-perishable food, a radio, flashlight, first aid kit, batteries, a whistle, and other items.
Please help us by making sure all ditches are free and clear, all tree limbs are secure, and strap down any items that may be loose to prevent any hazards.
Our electric team is prepared to handle outages. We also have additional crews in route to assist with any damage. It is always our goal to maintain power to residents, but we do expect outages, which could be prolonged. Please plan accordingly. If you have medical issues that require you to have power, we encourage you to leave voluntarily until storm is over and all power is restored. If you have questions as to potential resources, please call Vermilion Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) at 337-898-4308 or dial 211.
Please remember to avoid flood water: Flood water can contain dangerous debris. DO NOT DRIVE DOWN FLOODED STREETS OR ROADWAYS.
If you encounter barricades, DO NOT DRIVE AROUND THEM. Not only is driving around barricades illegal, you could be risking your life or the life of passengers.
As of 5:00pm today, there is no evacuation order or curfew set for Vermilion Parish or the City of Abbeville. This is subject to change as the storm approaches, we will share any changes as soon as we know them.
Please follow the National Hurricane Center for updates: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
If you have any questions, please contact City Hall @ 337-893-8550. As always, we have teams on call for emergencies until such time as it is no longer safe to be on roadways.
Please stay safe, we are here to serve.
For life threatening emergencies, dial 911.
