FIRE AND POLICE APPLICANTS

To Apply for Positions within the Police Department or Fire Department: Pick up
applications at the City Court Building located at 208 S. State Street, Abbeville,
Louisiana.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR MUNICIPAL CIVIL SERVICE APPLICANTS

APPLICATIONS

FILING: Application forms may be obtained from City Hall, 101 N. State Street,
Abbeville, Louisiana between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Business
Days. Applicants are responsible for the truth of all statements made in their
application. False statements are grounds for rejection of application. When
returning completed application, present a valid driver’s license or identification
card and current voter’s registration for verification purposes.

NOTE DEADLINE DATE: Job vacancies are posted on all departmental bulletin
boards in addition to the City Hall bulletin board. Application forms must be
returned to the City Hall in person or by mail before the deadline date and time
specified on the job announcement. No application will be accepted after the
deadline.

CITIZENSHIP: All applicants must be citizens of the United States.

RESIDENCE: All candidates for the civil service exam must be qualified voters of
the parish or county in which they reside.

AGE: The minimum age for City employment is eighteen (18) years.

EXAMINATION: All persons appointed for employment will be required to
successfully complete a screening to test their ability to perform the essential
job functions for the position applied for and submit to a drug screen urinalysis
as a contingency before reporting to work.

VETERAN’S PREFERENCE: Provided a passing grade is attained on the
examination, five points shall be added to the grade of each applicant who has
served in the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty for ninety consecutive days or
more and received an honorable discharge. Applicants claiming preference
under these provisions must present original or true copy discharge papers
(DD214) to the Civil Service Office for verification of service.

QUALIFICATIONS: Read the job announcement carefully. Note the minimum
and/or desirable education and experience requirements. You must specifically
show that you meet the minimum requirements when such requirements are
specified on the job announcement; otherwise, you will not be allowed to take
the exam.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Applicants should clearly show all of their
education and work experience; and should include any volunteer experience.
Be specific in completing these important sections.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR TELEPHONE NUMBER: All applicants and eligibles
are responsible for notifying the Civil Service Office of any change of address
and/or telephone number.

Employment Details

EXAM NOTIFICATION: Applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the examination later by mail. Applicants who are unable to appear for the exam must contact the Civil Service Office before the scheduled examination; otherwise, their application will be withdrawn.

EXAMINATIONS: Exams may include written tests, oral tests, tests of performance or a rated interview.

SICK LEAVE: All employees are credited with one day of sick leave per month of consecutive employment. Employees may convert to retirement credit any unused accrued sick and annual leave upon retirement with the City’s retirement plan.

HOLIDAYS: All employees receive up to fifteen paid holidays per year.

WORKER’S COMPENSATION AND UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION: All City of Abbeville employees are covered under the provision of the workmen’s compensation and unemployment programs as prescribed by state law.
