As 2024 draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on the progress we’ve made together as a community. This year has been filled with many milestones, each moving us closer to a brighter and stronger future. These achievements have only been possible because of the passion and dedication of our residents, local businesses, and community partners, for which we are deeply grateful.

This year, we made significant strides in improving our infrastructure. Road and sidewalk projects began with valuable input from the public, ensuring the changes reflect the needs and ideas of our community. The Downtown Road Project has transformed the heart of our city, making it more accessible, safer, and inviting for all. The Graceland Project also kicked off and will bring new sidewalks and traffic-calming features, improving safety and connectivity for residents and visitors alike. Additionally, funding was secured for projects along MLK Drive, continuing our commitment to fostering growth and development across all areas of the city.

We remain focused on the future through our many ongoing planning efforts. Thanks to a grant from the Delta Regional Authority, we hosted walking audits and open houses, giving residents the opportunity to shape the vision for Abbeville’s future. This year also marked the creation of our very first Youth Council, an exciting step in empowering young leaders to engage with local government and share their voices in shaping the city’s direction.

We also made great strides in fostering connections and community dialogue. We introduced “Coffee Talks,” which have become a welcoming space for residents to come together, have meaningful conversations, and share ideas about the future of Abbeville. Our partnership with local schools brought initiatives like the “Attend and We All Win” campaign to life, encouraging better school attendance and supporting the success of our students.

Abbeville’s public spaces saw significant improvements as well. Lafitte Park received upgrades that included handicap-accessible features, making it a welcoming place for everyone to enjoy.

We also celebrated our history as we uncovered cypress storm drain pipes dating back to the late 1800s and oyster shells used to pave our historic roads—reminders of the rich heritage that grounds our city.

Our water system received an A rating this year, a testament to the hard work of our city team, who remain committed to delivering quality water to residents. Additionally, we secured funding to begin upgrading the system, ensuring its sustainability for years to come.

This year also brought the introduction of new community events like “March Into Health,” while cherished traditions were revived and celebrated. The Abbeville Christmas Stroll reached record participation on its 25th anniversary, spreading magic and joy throughout the holiday season.

This year has truly been a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit. Together, we have achieved so much, and our commitment to improving Abbeville continues to grow. As we look ahead to 2025, let’s build on this momentum, continuing to work together to make Abbeville an even better place to live, work, and play.

Thank you for being a vital part of our city’s journey. Wishing you a joyful and prosperous new year! Let’s move forward, together, into an exciting new chapter for Abbeville.
