Ribbon Cutting Celebrates 37 Years of Community at Parker Hebert Park

On May 20, 2025 we proudly hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at Parker Hebert Park, celebrating both a series of recent park improvements and 37 years of community impact.

Originally opened on May 18, 1988, Parker Hebert Park was named in honor of former Councilman Parker Hebert — a dedicated public servant who committed his life to the betterment of Abbeville and the youth of Vermilion Parish. As co-founder of Little League Baseball and Vermilion Biddy Basketball, and a key figure in the development of A.A. Comeaux Park, Mr. Hebert left a lasting mark on recreation in our city. He served 12 years on the Abbeville City Council, including four years as mayor pro-temp.

Now, 37 years later, the park continues to thrive as a place for families to gather, play, and create lasting memories. The most recent upgrades celebrated during the ceremony include:

  • An upgraded merry-go-round, thanks to the support of Acadian Contractors

  • Brand new playground equipment for children of all ages

  • New bleachers added near the basketball court

  • Additional trash cans to help keep the park clean and inviting

  • A generous contribution from the Rotary Club of Abbeville to support ongoing enhancements

These park updates were complemented by broader improvements along Graceland Avenue, including:

  • A complete road overlay

  • 6-foot ADA-accessible sidewalks

  • Speed humps on both sides of the park to calm traffic and improve safety

Together, these upgrades represent the City’s continued commitment to creating safe, accessible, and inclusive public spaces that serve the needs of all residents.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by City leaders, community members, and Mr. Hebert’s daughters — making it a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of a man who helped shape the very heart of this neighborhood.

The City of Abbeville extends its sincere thanks to all who contributed to these improvements and encourages residents to visit Parker Hebert Park to enjoy the renewed space and reflect on the power of community-driven progress.
