Civil Service / Human Resources

The Civil Service and Human Resources office manages hiring, testing, and personnel records for the City of Abbeville. Nearly every City job is a classified position under the Municipal Civil Service System, which means openings are posted publicly, applicants are tested, and candidates are selected from an eligible register.

This page covers what’s open right now, how to apply, what the exam process looks like, and what the City offers its employees. If you can’t find what you need, call or email the office directly — someone will walk you through it.

Nothing here that fits?

Review the classified job descriptions below so you’re ready when a position opens, or contact the Civil Service office to ask what’s coming.

Apply Online

The full application takes about 15 minutes. You can save your progress and finish later. You’ll still need to bring your driver’s license and voter registration card to City Hall before testing.

How to apply

Three steps, in order. Fire and Police applicants pick up and return applications at their own stations; every other department goes through City Hall.

1

Get the Application

Pick up a paper application at City Hall, the Fire Station, or the Police Station — or download and print it.

  • City Hall: 101 N. State Street
  • Fire: 210 West Vermilion Street
  • Police: 304 Charity Street

2

Fill it Out Completely

Read the job announcement first and show clearly that you meet the minimum education and experience requirements — otherwise you won’t be allowed to test.

  • List all education and work history, including volunteer work
  • You are responsible for the truth of every statement; false statements are grounds for rejection

3

Return it Before the Deadline

Bring the completed application to City Hall during office hours, before the date and time on the job announcement.

  • Bring a valid driver’s license or ID card
  • Bring your current voter registration card
  • Claiming veteran’s preference? Bring your DD214
