Downtown Project becomes the first Louisiana community to earn a national category award in the Federal Highway Administration’s Build a Better Mousetrap Innovation Program.
The City of Abbeville is proud to announce that the Downtown Abbeville Street Improvement Project has been named the 2026 National Winner in the Putting Families First category of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Build a Better Mousetrap Innovation Program.
According to the Louisiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Center, this marks the first time a Louisiana community has earned a national category award through the program.
The Build a Better Mousetrap Innovation Program recognizes innovative transportation projects from across the nation that improve how communities plan, design, and build local infrastructure. The Putting Families First category recognizes projects that make transportation safer, more accessible, and more connected for families and communities.
The Downtown Abbeville Street Improvement Project transformed the City’s historic downtown through roadway improvements, enhanced pedestrian accessibility, and streetscape enhancements designed to create a safer, more welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.
This national recognition reflects the dedication and collaboration of the many individuals and organizations who helped make the project possible. The City extends its appreciation to the previous administration, the City Council, city employees, engineers, contractors, state and local partners, downtown businesses, and residents whose commitment and teamwork contributed to the project’s success.
While the award does not include additional funding, it is a significant honor that highlights Abbeville’s innovative approach to infrastructure and community development. National recognition through the Federal Highway Administration helps showcase the City on a broader stage while strengthening opportunities for future partnerships, grants, and continued investment.
As part of the award, representatives from the City of Abbeville will present the Downtown Project at the 2027 Louisiana Transportation Conference, where transportation professionals from across the state will learn about the project and its national recognition.
The City of Abbeville is honored to receive this recognition and remains committed to investing in projects that improve safety, accessibility, and quality of life for everyone who lives, works, and visits our community.
